Audits and Licensure Issues Spark Surveys

Published: October 2, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Conversations in AAHomecare council meetings identified urgent concerns regarding payer and licensing issues. A wave of Humana audits and the difficulty suppliers face in getting accurate state licensure information ahead of Round 2028 of the competitive bidding program have prompted two time-sensitive surveys to gather data from suppliers and address the real-world experiences suppliers are facing.

We ask all DMEPOS suppliers, members and nonmembers, to take a few minutes to complete these surveys. Data gathered will be confidential and used in aggregate. Both surveys will close October 15.

Humana Audit Survey
Humana is conducting large-scale Special Investigations Unit (SIU) audits of DMEPOS providers in multiple states. Several AAHomecare members have reported receiving a significant volume of audit requests beginning in mid-August.

This nationwide supplier survey will help AAHomecare determine the impact of these audits across the country as it engages Humana and CMS Part C Oversight on the issue. Providers should check Availity to see whether you have been affected by these audits. See our previous alert for details.

State Licensure Survey
As reported on September 8, National Provider Enrollment (NPE) contractors are updating their licensure databases with significant updates on state licensure requirements. Licensure requirements vary by location and product category, and suppliers planning to bid in Round 2028 must be appropriately licensed in the product category they are bidding in. The NPE licensure databases are key resources for all interested bidders and for CMS but appears to have inconsistencies with state licensure requirements.

This nationwide supplier survey will assess DMEPOS suppliers’ ability to access state licensure requirements, challenges met while seeking information, and confidence in the information currently available. AAHomecare will use the information to engage CMS and legislators. With the bidding window expected to open soon, now is the time for suppliers to share any challenges in preparing for Round 2028.

Who Should Take this Survey: All DMEPOS suppliers who provide product categories that will be part of Round 2028.
