WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following CMS’ May 2023 National Coverage Determination granting coverage for seat elevation systems used with Group 2, Group 3, and Group 5 power wheelchairs, the Agency is now developing coding, coverage, and payment regulations for this important technology. AAHomecare recently submitted comments on that effort supporting recommendations provided by NCART at the Nov. 30 virtual public meeting. Those recommendations, which were made with the goal to persuade CMS to enact appropriate HCPCS and to increase its proposed payment rate to a sustainable amount, included:
- Adopting the code description proposed in the NCART code application.
- Recognizing CRT Power Seat Elevation as a stand-alone system, the same as power tilt and/or power recline, and not merely an add on component.
- Requiring any product that meets the description of CRT Power Seat Elevation to possess clinically relevant minimum performance characteristics.
- Reconsidering the need for a separate HCPCS code for heavy-duty CRT Power Seat Elevation.
AAHomecare is proud to stand alongside NCART and other industry leaders who are working toward finally securing appropriate coverage and payment for power seat elevation. We also appreciate the contributions of the ITEM Coalition, the Clinician Task Force, and other advocacy groups who have provided input and support in securing coverage for this enabling technology.
